agrees that the first debate was won quite handedly by the republican challenger mitt romney and lost very much by president obama. but yesterday in santa barbara, i told this giant room full of people in this theater when asked about this subject that as clearly and as cleanly as mr. romney won the the debate, it still seems politically important that mr. romney did not win the debate in a way that produced a single sound byte. i mean, yeah, 60 million people watched romney win the debate overall, but for the 240 or so million american who is did not watch the debate who might have been curious about how it went, there was no single sound byte to take away from the debate to remember and repeat as the reason that mr. romney won. and so i sat at this event that even though romney won that night, won on debate night, there wasn't any day two story that could explain to people why it was that he won. i said, really, thinking about it, the only line, the single line that survived the debate, the only line that i think anybody can remember from the debate, i said this to a room of 2,000 p

better. romney came out best in the first debate because he denied the path he has chosen, denied the big tax cut from 35% down to 28% for people at the top bracket. the all-out elimination of the estate tax, the big-time cut in the corporate rate. he denied his plan to eliminate medicare, denied he would kill coverage for those with pre-existing conditions. he got away without bothering to deny his plan to let the automobile industry to go bankrupt and to dump 40 million people to wait in the emergency room. let's look at some of the latest polling in the wake of wednesday's debate. this afternoon pew released a poll that showed a dramatic shift toward romney. this poll covers the four days since the debate, and it has romney pulling even with president obama among registered voters, 46% even. four weeks ago pew had obama up by nine among registered voters, so this has been a huge shift in the pew poll. the move in the pew poll towards romney is greater among likely voters. romney is surging ahead to 49%. four weeks ago obama led among likely voters by eight. now to the latest gallup

presidential debate. it shows a big swing toward mitt romney. take a look, late this afternoon, there was this latest national pugh research poll. governor romney now holding a four point lead among likely voters who were surveyed after the debate. that is a big swing from mid september when president obama was ahead by eight. that was this afternoon, a short time ago, a poll running in the detroit free press shows the president's lead shrinking to just three points in michigan. mr. obama had a ten poernt lead there last month. mitt romney's running mate, paul ryan, is in michigan tonight addressing a rally at oakland university in the town of rochester just outside detroit. the question tonight, if the mood of voters is changing here, could it also be a sign that it's changing in ohio as well, another key battleground state. the poll in the free press and the pew poll not the only good news for the romney forces. they got a big boost as well in gallup's tracking poll which shows a 47-47 tie among likely voters contacted on the 4th through the 6th. in pre-debate polling, mr. ob

of that debate being viewed by so many millions of americans last week, that mitt romney was able to reach through the filter of the media as they like to call it, ann romney referred to it that way in an event in florida last week, and beyond those campaign ads, the very nasty campaign ads coming from the obama campaign to talk directly to the american people, and they feel like that's a factor as well. they are also looking at what they call persuadable voters, those are voters who can swing back and forth, and if you look at that latest pew research center poll, which showed the president with an eight point lead just a couple weeks ago, now mitt romney has a five point lead. obviously there is some give and take there in terms of these numbers, but i have to tell you i did talk to another romney campaign aide who was sounding a bit more cautious saying they would prefer this poll had come out on november 4th, not october 8th. >> we will talk to cornell belcher, a pollster for the obama 2012 campaign in a moment. dan, the president's campaign, are they saying anything publicly
